On today’s sports extravaganza that is the BCfm Sports show we reflect on plans Gloucestershire Cricket club had for redeveloping their Bristol headquarters before they were rejected by city council planners.
I talked to Chief Executive Tom Richardson and first team captain, Alex Gidman prior to a planning meeting as they voiced their enthusiasm for a proposed development that would cost ten million pounds.
Bristol City are at mid-table Brighton & Hove Albion in The Championship on Saturday. Stephen Pearson serves a one-game ban after his red card in the FA Cup defeat to Crawley and Marvin Elliot is doubtful with a hamstring strain. Liam Fontaine is still out but new loan signing Chris Wood and Ricky Foster could make their debuts. Kazenga LuaLua is a major doubt for Brighton after suffering a hamstring injury in the FA Cup against Wrexham. Spaniard Vicente and Will Hoskins are set to return, while Lewis Dunk is available again after suspension.
Bristol Rovers host table toppers Crawley Town at the Memorial stadium and the Pirates will want to move further away from the wrong end of the League Two Relegation zone. Back in September the gas lost by 4 goals to one with Lee Brown grabbing a consolation goal. In midweek it was Mr Brown who came up trumps with the opening strike in a 2-1 away win at fellow strugglers Hereford United.
Our favourite Amateur Football club are Bristol Athletic FC. No match last week for the Saturday side last week because of the wet weather. Athletic lie 6th in the table with 19 points from 11 matches, 7 points off leaders Easton Cowboys Suburbia who have a game in hand in Premier Division Two of the Bristol Surburban league. Today they face Severn Beach at Failand (2pm). The Under 18′s are at home to Kingswood in Bristol Division North of the Bristol Football combination on sunday.
In Rugby Union, Bristol beat bottom side Esher last week by 27 points to 7. Bristol are now eleven points clear of 2nd placed Bedford Blues. Today’s opponents in the capital are third placed London Welsh. Dings Crusaders narrowly lost 24-23 at Redruth last Saturday. This afternoon they have a crucial relegation scrap at home to bottom side Westcombe Park. Clifton RFC also lost out last week, with a defeat to Henley by 29 points to 20 at Cribbs Causeway. Today they make the short trip up the M5 to play Gloucestershire neighbours Lydney.
We also talk Badmington with Gary Scrivens. The Warmley club are suffering from a dip in Membership, so if you fancy a game for only £3 then ring 0117 9583168 after 6pm. Members meet every Tuesday in the sports hall at the Grange school and sports college, Tower Road North, Warmely between 7pm and 10pm.
Don’t forget that during Clane Selway’s saturday show (3-5pm), I ‘ll update you on the latest football and rugby scores plus from 5pm until 6pm, we have a full hour dedicated to the ‘Results Round-up’, so you’ll know how City, Rovers and Bristol Rugby clubs get on today.
