As part of The Co-Operative Foundation’s Truth About Youth course, run by The Prince’s Trust in Bristol, the group of 16-25-year-olds learnt basic radio production techniques and interviewed members of the local community.

During the three-week course, the youngsters met and interviewed a range of people from the community of Southmead to discover and challenge perceptions of young people in the area.

They spoke to retired people from a community group about their views on today’s young people, and interviewed a community police officer about his work in the city.

The group shared their own experiences of issues such as depression and drug abuse, and spoke to other young people who had overcome challenges in their personal lives.

The result is a positive and inspiring look at young people in Bristol today.

Leonard Cheshire Disability’s Can Do Project has joined forces with BCfm 93.2fm to train young disabled people how to make their own radio shows.

Can Do is a national volunteering initiative for young people run by the charity Leonard Cheshire Disability. The Can Do project coordinator in Bristol, Clare Paine, supports disabled people aged 16-35 to volunteer, engage with local community projects and also runs a variety of projects herself.

Clare recently linked up 8 students with learning disabilities who are on the Horizons Course at Ashley Down College, part of the City of Bristol College, with BCfm 93.2fm. During this time they have learnt how to use a microphone and recorder, interview techniques and have gone out and about to interview people.

Can Do Project Coordinator, Clare Paine, says: “This project is a fantastic opportunity for local people to get involved in a community project, learn new skills, raise awareness of disability and gain some valuable experience for their CVs”.
